Leona, the Northern Mockingbird, cooling off in the pool at Le Avian Rural Day Spa
Photography and Bird Story by Norma Beaird
Leona, our Northern Mockingbird, is quite a force here at the Rural Georgia Bird Sanctuary! She keeps watch over the entire yard, to include vocally chastising any unwanted arrivals. As a matter of fact, one could say that she's a little territorial as she appoints herself to be Queen Mockingbird.
This year, she built her nest in the tree directly behind our cottage. She sees us when we walk outside the back door with food. We're kinda thinking that she wanted to be the first one to know when the buffet is replenished at Le Avian Cafe. She likes being "in the know" with the owners at the cafe! I guess we could call it typical queen behavior!
Leona is really serious about her bath time!
Leona has been raising her little toddler (well, she's not that little) and she needed some rest and relaxation at Le Avian Rural Day Spa. We filled up the pool so that she could visit and enjoy wetting her wings in the midst of a hot and humid day. This Georgia heat and humidity has become overwhelming this year, especially with the gnats and mosquitoes. That's why it's so important to offer birds a nice, clean birdbath where they can drink, bathe and; in Leona's case, take a dip in the pool.
Leona's new toddler, Dixie, doesn't like the word "No"!
Leona brought her new toddler, Dixie, to Le Avian Rural Day Spa. However, we learned that sweet little Dixie is rather feisty and didn't particularly care for Leona's motherly orders. So, Dixie took off after her bath, dried her wings and Leona retreated back to their home....for some more rest and relaxation. After all, raising toddlers can be exhausting!
